Have you ever had a conversation with someone who has an amazing healing story to share? The kind of story that begins with such detrimental news about a loved ones health and all of the sudden a miracle cure has been found.
I remember budging in on a conversation between two individuals talking about a miracle cure. The person leading the conversation was sharing his fathers case of debilitating chronic low back pain. The pain was progressively getting worse and nothing worked.
Long story short, the solution to his fathers back pain was a Far-Infrared device. Upon mentioning this, I immediately pulled up google and researched this myself. It appears to be a valid and effective therapeutic source of healing.
Facts about Far-Infrared Radiation (FIR)
- All living organisms are subjected to the natural electromagnetic radiation reaching the earth from the sun,
-Thermal radiation (or infrared) is a band of energy in the complete electromagnetic spectrum and it has been used effectively for millennia to treat/ease certain maladies and discomforts.
-FIR wavelength is too long to be perceived by the eyes, however, the body experiences its energy as a gentle radiant heat which can penetrate up to 1.5 inches beneath the skin.
-Increases Immune System function
-Improves overall circulation (warms blood and expands vessels)
-Reduces the time of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
-Reduces Stress and Fatigue

John Calarco, owner of Power Health and Performance is a person who shares the same attitude and interests as my own. We both value and teach the importance of mastering movement and creating healthy habits to thrive.
Once I found out about his new performance center located in the heart of Harrison, I had to try it out. The facility is structured to accommodate private and semi private training sessions. Moreover, the space is open which allows plenty of room to move around without obstructing others.
One of the highlights about this center is the encouragement you get from the people working out. Everyone seems to be fully committed and exercise with a purpose. In fact, when they see you putting in the effort you will receive lots of positive feedback!
I hear a lot of people saying that they have the best trainer, but John is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable and attentive coaches around. It is a privilege and honor to have John in my professional network as he is someone I can trust to get the job done with uncompromising quality.
It is encouraging to see young professionals venture out on their own. I understand that it requires a lot of time and preparation to do what John has accomplished. I am confident that his business will thrive and enhance the lives of those fortunate enough to experience what Power Health and Performance has to offer.

Have you ever had a time when your muscles get so tight that the slightest attempt to move seems almost impossible without causing pain?
Yeah, me too...
On my way home from the Westchester Ultimate Summer League Championship game my right groin was starting to spasm. I remember driving my car looking like a fool trying to create space for my hip. Nothing seemed to be working and every time I accelerated, my groin progressively got worse!
Of course the sensible thing to do would be to pull over and lengthen my hip through a series of lunge matrices (Gray Institute) to avoid a complete lock up. However, by this time I was already on the Hutchinson Pkwy hungry, thirsty and fatigued so I just kept on movin' and groovin' in the drivers seat.
These kinds of experiences are never fun and may limit our abilities to carry on with optimal function. That's why its best to prevent these situations as much as possible using soft tissue therapy techniques coming from a manual therapist or yourself.
Tissue Release is simply a sense of softening and relaxation that is perceptible when the technique in use has come to successful completion.
One or all of these factors may be involved in any one perceived Release.
1. Relaxation of nervous reflexes which have produced increased tissue tone.
2. Tissue morphological change from elastic resistance to viscous compliance.
3. A sense of increased passage of fluids through the tissues under treatment.
4. A sense of increased flow of energy through the tissues under treatment.
5. An emission of increased heat radiating form the appropriate body region.

I believe that taking a holistic approach to wellness will positively impact the bodies ability to expand its entire sphere of function. The soft tissue needs nourishment just like everything else in the body to perform at optimal capacity.
This radically simple approach of avoiding long periods of stillness, eating real nourishing food and living with a purpose all promote a healthier version of yourself.
Have you ever had a time when you thought you were not going to feel accepted from a new environment? How about a time when you gave yourself a no before somebody else did?
"I don't think I am ready for this" or "I'm going to look like I don't know what I am doing."
This kind of self talk is limiting and will lead to missed opportunities. I heard someone use an acronym A.N.Ts (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and the best way to combat is to stomp out as many ANTs as possible.
I guarantee that your day will be much more fruitful in opportunities and emotionally fulfilling as others will often reflect your mindset.

There are three frogs sitting on a log.
Two of the frogs decide to jump in the pond.
How many frogs are left sitting on the log
Answer: 3 frogs
Moral: Just because you decide to do something, doesn't mean you actually acted on it.
My hope is that you prioritize your personal goals to nurture your better self. It does require time and deliberate practice, but making time for your own wellbeing in the hopes of benefiting others is well worth it.

I want to dedicate this post to my good friend Betty who has allowed me to help ease her physical pain and stiffness using my skill set in Massage Therapy.
Whenever the opportunity to learn from others presents itself to you, I suggest you take it. In fact, I believe having mentors and earth angels in your life is an extreme honor and privilege that shouldn't be taken for granted.
It took me quite a while to learn that it's hard to succeed in life on my own. In fact, one of the most significant lessons I learned is allowing myself to value and focus on interdependence.
Over the years, I have made an effort to surround myself with people who are willing to share their stories and expand on a level of intimacy that is rarely seen in most public settings.
I consider these people to be my mentors as they offer their insight and wisdom onto me. I have learned how to voice my opinion in a gentle manner, prepare for life in a way that is holistic which is more in line with nature and to simply enjoy the present moment.
Investing time with mentors is an appreciating asset that doesn't get utilized as much as it should. The amount of time you save by listening to the advice and wisdom of others will allow you to make the choices that best serve you in the future. In spite of this, I am confident in stating that it will dramatically improve the quality and longevity of your life.
Thank you to all of my mentors in life and my hope is that we all can connect on a deeper level to nurture our ability to love, serve and be compassionate to one another.
How long have you been with Zeel?
I’ve been with Zeel since January 2015.
What interested you in becoming a massage therapist?
I’ve been interested in the human body and its function since I was in high school. I played sports in high school, and became a personal trainer after graduation.
So how did you go from becoming a personal trainer to becoming a Zeel Massage Therapist?
As I worked with clients, I became really interested in the science of movement and human physiology. I was constantly referring clients to massage therapists, and decided to look into becoming a massage therapist myself.
Are you still a personal trainer?
I am. The two professions work really well together. It’s great to be able to open up joints and improve muscle function through massage therapy, since I know that will also help athletic performance.
Have you been watching the Olympics?
Absolutely. It’s a privilege to see athletes at the top of their game. Most of them, obviously, are optimally conditioned, though I do notice the occasional misalignment!
Anything else Zeel customers should know about you?
I value education and learning about the human body. I’m constantly reading the latest research. The human body is still such a mystery, but we’re learning more about it every day. I always try to incorporate what I’ve learned into my massage practice.
The athletes in this summer's Rio Olympics have demonstrated enormous feats of strength, power and will. As I reflect on my own life, I am thankful to be able to look up to such incredible talent to help fuel my own fire to achieve my goals. Acknowledging the fact that success leaves clues allows me to easily unpack the lives of those I look up to and mimic their habits.
Creating habits that promote a healthy life is a priority of mine and surrounding myself with people who share those values enhances my ability to not just survive, but thrive.
Today, I spent the afternoon partnering up with Yogasmoga located in The Westchester servicing chair massage.
It was such an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to set up shop and observe the staff verbalize the value of luxury yoga wear. The quality of their fabric and stitching conforms to the body throughout all ranges of motion within each joint and breathes to optimize temperature regulation. I can speak about their signature style but this aspect is mostly subjective so check it out at www.yogasmoga.com and see what you think.
As a functional soft tissue therapist, I admire and appreciate the form and function of fascia in the human body and anything that mimics and enhances this motion has my approval.
Yogasmoga is the new force in town looking to dominate the yoga and fitness market and I wish them all the best.
I like to compare the maintenance of healthy soft tissue with dental hygiene. They both require daily care to maintain proper function and form. If you decide to stop brushing and flossing your teeth, deterioration is inevitable.
Now, imagine you continue neglecting your oral hygiene and you will soon find out from others that your breath is unbearable, cavities will begin to form and infection ensues. In spite of this, the notion of having all that abuse suddenly vanish just by making an appointment with a dental hygienist will not bring your teeth back to the vibrant white smile you may have once had.
The soft tissue which is composed of skin, superficial and deep fascia, ligaments, tendons, muscle, fat, nerves and blood vessels need the same care and daily attention as your oral structures.
The body thrives on movement and serves as a nourishing component just like brushing your teeth. Adding more dynamic movement to your daily routine doesn't always have to be devoting one hour to an exercise class but rather integrating movement to what you already do.
For example, while you're on the phone why not go through some body weight squats or purchasing a dynamic workstation that accommodates variety in positions like standing, kneeling and sitting.
Just remember that our bodies worst enemy is stillness and the idea of not moving for a long period of time will be detrimental to the quality of our soft tissue which will ultimately lead to sprains, strains and tears.
It seems to me that people want to move more and feel better but just feel trapped in the culture. Get creative and think about ways you can integrate movement to your busy day. Lastly, please don’t wait for an injury or pain to happen before you make an appointment with a movement professional. Be proactive and emphasize the importance of preventive care.
